The goal of the Physical Education at Northview High School is to empower our student population with the knowledge and tangible skills needed to live an active and healthful life.
As obesity becomes a nationwide epidemic costing us billions of dollars and countless lives, these lessons have never been more important. We encourage you to learn more about our curriculum and the opportunities your child will have to embrace a more physically fit future.
Our courses include:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9
(YEAR, GRADE 9) REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION
Students in PE9 will participate in a wide variety of lifetime recreational activities, team sports and games. Students will participate in fitness testing, including a timed mile run, at least twice each semester. The class will emphasize the importance of physical fitness, conditioning, teamwork and basic sport skills. The students are required to wear appropriate exercise clothes and should have a combination lock for their lockers.
INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS MEDICINE
(SEMESTER, GRADES 11-12)
This course is designed to provide students with information pertaining to careers in the Sports Medicine field as related to athletic training. This course is geared towards students who may have an interest in pursuing a career in any health-related field. Students will study
anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology as related to injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Other topics will include nutrition, therapeutic use of heat and cold, taping/bracing and other selected topics including careers in the physical therapy field. The class will have both a lecture and a lab component.
TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS AND FITNESS
(SEMESTER, GRADES 10-12)
Students will be offered a wide range of activities. Each unit will run approximately five class periods with a tournament style format. Classes will begin with a warm-up using dynamic flexibility and a cardiovascular component. This is a very competitive, athletic course. A small fee may be assessed for activities outside Northview Public Schools. Students may need to supply their own equipment for certain units.
AEROBICS/PILATES/YOGA
(SEMESTER, GRADES 10-12)
This class is offered to provide students with the benefits of aerobics, pilates, and yoga. High and low impact aerobics will be used throughout the class to provide a total body conditioning workout. Pilates based exercises are designed to lengthen and strengthen the body using concentration and control. Yoga poses will develop flexibility, balance, and muscular strength. Academic work will include information on nutrition and goal setting. Students will need to provide a sticky mat (yoga exercise mat).
ADVANCED AEROBICS/PILATES/YOGA
(SEMESTER, GRADES 10-12)
PREREQUISITES: PASS P.E. 9 & AEROBICS/PILATES/YOGA OR HAVE TEACHER’S APPROVAL
This course will focus on your physical and mental well-being. Students will be challenged with advanced workouts in the three disciplines. High and low impact aerobics will focus on total body conditioning. Pilates based exercises are designed to lengthen and strengthen the body using concentration and control. Advanced yoga poses will develop flexibility, balance and muscular strength. Academic work will review information on nutrition and goal setting. Grades will be issued every three weeks. We will utilize guest presenters, videos, teacher and student directed workouts.
WEIGHT TRAINING & CONDITIONING I
(FIRST SEMESTER, GRADES 10-12)
WEIGHT TRAINING & CONDITIONING II
(SECOND SEMESTER, GRADES 10-12)
Students will follow a lifting program that is individually tailored to gain maximum results. Students will warm-up their muscles through cardiovascular workouts involving various movements (running, stretching, ladders, hurdles, plyometric boxes, and aerobic exercises). The students will then engage in strength training (core lifting, auxiliary lifting, chin ups, push ups, sit ups). Lastly, the students will participate in a variety of games/activities to improve their overall fitness level during each class period.
This program will be structured on an individual basis so each student may achieve the maximum benefit. Students will periodically be educated on the proper stretching, eating, drinking, and lifting techniques. Grades are based on performance during warm-up exercises, proper stretching techniques, weight room use and care, cardiovascular workouts, physical testing, and participation in activities/games. The emphasis is on continuation of a weight training regimen beyond class and an overall care for a healthy lifestyle.
E.L.99 LEADERSHIP CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT/WEIGHT TRAINING
(Year, GRADES 10-12)
This course is designed for the serious athlete, like any other accelerated course. The course will encompass two objectives in this single class. First, EL99 will advance the principles taught in the weight-training program. The course will include periodization cycles of full body weight training with an intensity level that is such to provide the student the highest level of physical development. Each athlete will be pre-tested in various areas of strength & agility, and their progress will be closely monitored and assessed. Secondly, the course will attack the mental development of the serious athlete. Character development and leadership development will be taught using a classroom setting and also through various experiential exercises. Topics to be discussed will include: How to represent a team, how to become a good teammate, how to treat teammates, responsibilities of leadership, depending on teammates, communication with teammates & coaches.
